ADC7674 replacement in EERoom

Today in the EERoom we replaces the six ADC7674 VME boards (SN: 10, 18, 20, 38, 15, 21) used by INJ, ENV and PSL sub-systems. We replace these boards by DaqBoxes with mezzanines ADC2378.

DaqBox 122 | ADC +/-20V 183 | ADC +/-20V 184 | ADC +/-20V 197 | ADC +/-20V 244 |
DaqBox 123 | ADC +/-20V 186 | ADC +/-20V 194 | ADC +/-20V 199 | ADC +/-20V 206 |
DaqBox 124 | ADC +/-20V 145 | ADC +/-20V 148 | ADC +/-20V 171 | ADC +/-20V 196 |

We added three Ethernet cables connected to the EERoom switch for the DaqBox connection. All unused optic fibers and timing cables have been removed.

Metalic part of BNC to Lemo adaptators have been isolated with heat-shrinkable sleeves.

We took the oportunity to clean the wiring of the whole rack, that's why the task took more time than expected.

Due to cable length constraints, three channels have been moved from already installed DaqBoxes:
INJ_SIB1_PELTIER moved from | DaqBox 40 - ADC +/-10V 30 ch7 | to | DaqBox 123 ADC +/-20V 199 ch6 |
INJ_IMC_REFL_I_POST moved from | DaqBox 42 - ADC +/-10V 48 ch0 | to | DaqBox 124 ADC +/-20V 196 ch0 |
ENV_IB_CT_FINGER_ACC_Y moved from | ADC7674 10 ch10 +/-20V | to | DaqBox 42 - ADC +/-10V 48 ch0 |
Gain of these channels will be changed in the configuration file according their new destination.

We still have to modify configuration files and check that all channels are properly aquired in the DAQ.

On Wednesday 20210418 we replaced the old ADC7674 adc boards with DaqBoxes adn ADC2378 adc mezzanines. This table contains all the modifications we did :

  • the first part of the table is the corresponding between ADC7674 channels and DaqBox/ADC2378 channels
  • the second part of the file is the list of all channels we  unplugged and plugged in Daq boxes already  in place

Due to cable length constraints, three  channels have been moved from already  installed Daq Boxes

  • INJ_SIB1_PELTIER moved from | DaqBox 40 - ADC +/-10V 30 ch7 |   to  | DaqBox 123 - ADC +/-20V 199 ch6 |
  • INJ_IMC_REFL_I_POST moved from | DaqBox 42 - ADC +/-10V 48 ch0 | to | DaqBox 124 - ADC +/-20V 196 ch0 |
  • ENV_IB_CT_FINGER_ACC_Y moved from | ADC7674  +/-20V 10 ch 10 | to | DaqBox 42 - ADC +/-10V 48 ch0 |

The channels without cable at the ADC input and the ones identified by the ENV, INJ and ALS subsystem were removed from the DAQ :

  • ENV: ENV_EER_MAG_1 (10KHz), ENV_IER_CHILLER_ACC_Y or ENV_SPRB_ACC (10KHz), ENV_INJ_ChillerFlow  (10KHz)
  • ALS: ALS_EIB_GREEN_Spol_MONI (10kHz), ALS_EIB_GREEN_Npol_MONI (10KHz}
  • INJ: INJ_IBMS_PD (20KHz), INJ_ML_TH_CORR (20KHz), INJ_KOHE_PD (20KHz), INJ_SFP_RAMP (20KHz), INJ_KOHE_PD2 (20kHz), PSTAB_PD1_AC_FS (400Kz). PSTAB_AMP_CORR (20kHz), INJ_IMC_QD_NF_I_SUM  (20KHz), Bs_SL_D2R_DC_bug (1KHz), PSL_SL_TRA_AC (20KHz)

The configuration of all the ADC2378 mezzanines was made on 2021/04/29 morrning by:

  • on the ADC2378 +/-10V  multiplyng by 2 the slope of the ADC7674 channels
  • on the ADC2378 +/-20V  multiplyng by 4 the slope of the ADC7674 channels

For the high bandwidth channels used to monitor the fast unlocks, with the ADC2378 mezzanine it is now possible to acquire channel and to send the raw content at 1MHz and to compute a 10KHz or/and 20KHz decimated channel. As consequence for these channels the bandwidth reduction and decimation are not done anymore on an Acl server like the ISYS_moni one.  Below the list of these channels previously hamdled by the ADC7674 boards and an Acl server:

  • from the "EER_DBOX1_ADC1" (DBOX_SN123-ADC2378_SN194):  PSL_ML_D1_POWER_FS, PSL_ML_D1_TEMP_ERR_FS, PSL_ML_CRISTAL_TEMP_ERR_FS sent to the INJ_rtpc;
  • from the "EER_DBOX2_ADC0" (DBOX_SN124-ADC2378_SN145): PSL_SL_REFL_I_FS, PSL_ML_AC_FS, PSL_PMC_TRA_AC_FS, PSL_PMC_REFL_I_FS sent to the ISC_rtpc;
  • from the "EER_DBOX2_ADC3" (DBOX_SN124-ADC2378_SN196): INJ_IMC_REFL_I_POST_raw_FS, INJ_ML_PZT_CORR_raw_FS

The full reconfiguration of the  ADC2378 and ISYS Acl servers was complete around noon the 2021/04/29:

  • ISYS_moni, we removed
    • the ALS_EIB_GREEN_{P,S}pol_MONI channels readout and propagation the NE and WE building. It remains to remove this readout on the ALS servers
    • the sampling frequency reduction for  _FS channels
  • ISYS_Acl:
    • as the INJ_IMC_QD_NF_I_SUM is not anymore acquired ,  the logic to build the IMC_QD_{N,F}F_AC_{H,V}_NORM channels has been updated

For each channel swapped we show in the following plots its trend before and after the swap ADC2378 board by ADC2378 board

The plots

  • with a blue rectangle means that the trend changed and the channel must be checked by the experts,
  • with a red circle means that there is a reduction on the gap between the min and max that occured at the same time  20210430-08h00UTC on several channels (PSTAB_QD{1,2}_DC_{,H,V} example)

From these plots one can see that

  • for most of the channels there is a smal modification of the electronic offset.
  • for the channels with  DC value greater than 0.1V , the trend  remains the same after the swap except for PSL_PMC_Pmonit_Prefl, PSL_ML_PD1_POWER and Pstap_pressure  channels
  • previously there was maybe some errors for the _FS channels reduced by an Acl server as theirs min, mean and max value were equal to zero:  PSL_SL_REFL_I, PSL_PMC_TRA_AC, PSL_PMC_REFL_I

Looking at the "_FS" channels  and their decimated ones I found that there is no difference

When we had changed the EEroom ADC7674 adcs by the ADC2378 ones,  the range remains the same +/-20V as well the number of bits 18 but the ADC sampling frequency changed from 400KHz or 800KHz to 1MHz. As consequence the Frame FrAdcCh  slope has changed .

Unfortunately if someone performs a dataDisplay plot  with a refresh period of 100%, it use the last Frame FrAdcCh slope, while if you reduce  the refresh period  the Frame FrAdcCh slope is update at each refresh period .

Below I compared the plots

As consequence all plots with the blue rectangle are due to this Frame FrAdcCh slope issue not updated according its modifications.

So everything  is as before or even better thank to the new ADC2378 facilities

I think there is a "typo" in this entry:

you wrote

"On Wednesday 20210418 we replaced the old ADC7674 adc boards ..."

but maybe the date should be

"On Wednesday 20210428 we replaced the old ADC7674 adc boards ..."

This seems not important, but while searching for works related to the INJ lab (electrical works done the days after) I have been unable to correlate actions.

We were notified by operators team that a sensor (ENV_IB_CT_FINGER_ACC_Y) was "dead" with a red flag in DMS since days.
We also had some strange and unexplained periodic weekly signals into a magnetic sensor (ENV_EER_MAG_2) placed over the MC tube.
After some head scratching, we understood that there was a cabling error occured during the change of the ADCs in the INJ EE_room: the magnetic sensor ENV_EER_MAG_2 was left unplugged, and the seismic sensor ENV_IB_CT_FINGER_ACC_Y was plugged into the ADC channel foreseen for the magnetic sensor.

In the attached photo is visible the (now corrected) situation:

  • ENV_EER_MAG_2 (magnetic sensor) is plugged into CH4 of ADC 171
  • ENV_IB_CT_FINGER_ACC_Y (seismic sensor) is plugged into CH0 of ADC 48

We also checked the healt of the signals, they now appears to be OK
