Losses measurements

Tonight we performed some measurements in order to improve the assessment of arms losses and finesse.

First we tried to understand if the mutual positions of mirrors and benches could affect the DC power of the B1p, B4 and B5 PDs. Therefore we performed different tests:

1) North arm locked, West arm misaligned. Moving the SDB1 bench (bench LC open) didn't affect the power level on the PDs. The WI mirror was misaligned by ~800 urad in TY.

We performed the lock/unlocked measurement, and at least from a qualitative point of view it seemed that all the PDs see a higher power when the cavity is unlocked, as expected. Measurements start from about 19:08 UTC, as shown in figure 1.

2) West arm locked, North arm misaligned. Same as before. Measurements start from 19:33 UTC.

3) Fast unlock performed with arms locked (one at the time), and arms unlocked with only ITM aligned. They start from GPS = 1194982918 for West arm, GPS = 1194983935 for North arm.

4) Finally, we closed one at the time all the PD shutters to measure their floor level. They start from GPS = 1194984662.

Then, we relocked the ITF. The WI_PAY corrections saturated and Lucia restored the controls, so that after some attempts we could relock. Further checks are needed and Valerio is already aware of the situation.

I have extrapolated the round trip losses for the two arms from the change in reflectivity during the lock/unlocks.

This time all the photodiods show the expected behavior, with a reduction of the reflectivity when the cavity is locked.

The set of lock/unlocks was performed keeping the cavity always aligned, so that it keeps flashing when unlocked. I used the reflected power when the cavity is flashing to normalize the one reflected in the locked state.

In the following the computed losses are reported:

PD

OFFSET (mW)

NORTH (ppm)

WEST (ppm)

B1p_PD2 -3.4e-4 50+/- 5 50+/-10
B5_PD2 -9e-3 100+/-10 N/A
B4_PD1 -1e-4 100+/-20 100+/-30

(I was not able to identify in the data the closure of the shutter for B5 so I used as offset the value recorded during an unlock of the IMC)

In the attached pdf a comparison between raw and trend data of the reflected power for the lock unlocks is shown for all the photodiodes. B4 shows large fluctuations especially for the west arm.

Conclusion:

1) Photodiodes are still showing a disagrement of about a factor two (B1p vs B4/B5).

2) Despite its large fluctuations, B4 seems to be in agreement with B5 and the value they measure (about 100 ppm) is almost compatible with the recycling gain and decay time upper limits.

3) The loss asymmetry between the two arms seems to be very small for all the photodiodes.
