Site-wide HVAC systems switch-off

Today, we switched off several devices related to all HVAC systems, including:

  • AHU
  • Chillers
  • Cold and hot water pumps

The HVAC systems involved were: NEB, WEB, MCB, CEB Hall, CEB Clean Room, DET Lab, INJ Lab. For the AHUs of CEB, chillers and water pumps of Technical Building 1 were not switched off.
The attached list reports the timing of each action for each building.

Figure 1: The blue and purple curves correspond to the configurations with all devices switched-on and all devices switched-off, respectively. No significant impact on the sensitivity is observed, except for a slight reduction around 11.3 Hz, 13.6–16.5 Hz, 18.7 Hz, 54 Hz, 1118 Hz, 1256.7 Hz, 5200 - 5850 Hz. Further analysis will follow to confirm them.

Figure 2: the top plot shows the BNS range, and the bottom plot shows the temperature of the experimental rooms during the switch-off. The temperature variations are small (1 deg) in the experimental areas. No correlated impact was observed in the BNS range.

I looked for an acoustic contribution of the INJ HVAC above 100Hz. Attached Figures highlight that there is a measurable contribution also above 100Hz, up to a few kHz.

The main effect is seen by the microphone LLR_MIC, which on Nov 27 2025 was positioned close to one air outlet (https://logbook.virgo-gw.eu/virgo/?r=67829). As a check, the second Figure shows similar spectra collected in the switch off performed on April 14 2025 (https://logbook.virgo-gw.eu/virgo/?r=66584), when the LLR_MIC was positioned in the middle of the INJ LAB (https://logbook.virgo-gw.eu/virgo/?r=65284). The result is the same.
