ground current monitor

We set up one gound current monitor, we named ENV_CEB_GROUND_CURR_MON which is connected in DAQ room, ADC 7674 n.46, ch.11.

The probe is one Tektronix A622 clamp, with max range set 0-10A, 100mV/A.

Since around 11 UTC the probe is clamped on the two grounding cables connecting the ENEL and UPS electrical panels located in CEB in front of the INJ cryotrap. See Figure 1. The measured current is about +/- 7A.

Before choosing this final location we performed some tests.

We first checked that the clamp measurement was not influenced by the current flow in the nearby electrical cables. For doing this we positioned the probe onto the cable tray and oriented it in the 3 othogonal directions (the measured  current was around +/- 0.07 A for all three directions). See Figure 2. We also positioned the clamp about 1m away from the cable tray (the measured current was +/- 0.047 A).

We also performed a measurement on some of the grounding cables connected to the copper grounding collector bar (see Figure 3), peak values are reported in the attached txt file. We noticed that for all grounding cable the signal has the same spectral shape, but different intensity. Figure 4 compares ASDs measured at some positions. Figure 5 shows trend data.

This morning, using the same probe left in acquisition two weeks ago, we performed a sniffing on a copper grounding braid connected to a metal rod that is presumably embedded in the building’s concrete floor. The braid runs along a cable tray on the building's floor, near the electrical panel (in front of the INJ cryotrap).

The current clamp was left attached to the ground cable of the BS base, which seems to be connected to this copper grounding braid.
A (Bartington) magnetometer ENV_CEB_GROUND_MAG was installed nearby and cabled to DAQroom for data acquisition (ADC 7674, SN 46, ch 12).
We are currently recording only the x channel: the amplitude measured on the y channel was comparable, while the z channel showed a significantly lower signal level.

A look at long averaged coherence between the ground current monitor and hrec_gated, up to 250Hz - Figures 1 and 2:

  • some coherence at structures between 46 and 48Hz seen in Hrec, which should correspond to crossbar modes of TM payloads
  • narrow lines coherence: 46.0 Hz (frequency of the inverter driving the supply fan of CEB hall HVAC), 80.5, 62.5

The two checked times are: 30 Nov 2025 9:00, 6 hrs (current probe at ground rod on the top of electrical panel in front of INJ cryotrap); 22 Feb 2026 2:00, 6 hrs (current probe at ground cable of the BS base).

Similar coherences are found also with magnetometers - Figures 3 and 4:

  • the magnetometer on WI tower base sees enhanced coherence at 48.0 and 48.65 Hz: the latter is a known resonance of WI crossbar.
