Loudspeakers beating test (acoustic injection) at CEB

Today, we injected various audio signals to evaluate the beating technique. The loudspeakers were placed on the DET terrace and positioned as far apart as the cable length permitted.

Test Schedule:

  • 08:15:00 + 1200s → 49 Hz and 51 Hz

  • 09:24:00 + 600s  →  54 Hz and 54.01 Hz

  • 09:39:00 + 300s  →  54.01 Hz and broadband noise

During the tests, significant background noise was present due to crane operations in the CEB hall.

This morning, following the last failed acoustic injections #67509 (despite the loudspeaker being left powered), a few tests were carried out to investigate and fix the problem with the smart PDU (Loudspeaker_PDU).

  • Test 1: All acoustic injections via METRATON → failed

  • Test 2: Only NEB and WEB acoustic injections via METRATON → successful

  • Test 3: Only CEB acoustic injection via METRATON → failed

  • Test 4: Only CEB acoustic injection via AcousticInjectionCEB VPM process→ failed

  • Test 5: Only CEB acoustic injection via ENVnoise VPM process → successful

From Figure 1, the problem seems to be related to a loss of communication with the PDU. As a temporary workaround to enable acoustic injections, the code lines handling the switch-on/off were commented out:

  • code: /virgoDev/EnvSwepts/v3r0/scripts/AcousticColoredInjection_v1.py
  • lines: #177, 282, 283

After this modification, both CEB-only acoustic and all acoustic injections via METRATON were successfully tested, Figure 2.

The issue should ultimately be fixed by addressing the malfunction of the smart PDU.
