New magnetic sensors in CEB

Three new magnetic sensors were installed in the CEB today. These are three-axis Bartington magnetometers model Mag-03MC100.

They are located on the base of the towers, at beam level, with the physical axis (their "Z-axis") always pointing in the NS-Virgo direction (i.e., oriented like their Metronix big brothers inside the CEB).

The axis will be (re)named as follows:

  • X --> W
  • Y --> V
  • Z --> N

and the name will be ENV_NI_MAG_"axis name" for the one placed on the NI tower, and in agreement for the other two: ENV_WI_MAG and ENV_BS_MAG.

The exact position is:

  • ENV_NI_MAG_  is located on the N side of the NI tower,  west side of the vacuum tube (serial number is 3735);
  • ENV_WI_MAG_ is located on the W side of the WI tower, north side of the vacuum tube (serial number is 3732);
  • ENV_BS_MAG_ is located on the N side of the BS tower, west side of the vacuum tube (serial number is 3734).

The probes are connected to the interface power supply (left on), but still need the cable to connect to the ADCs. If we can use 9 ADC channels in the TCS room, we need nine 20-meter long coaxial cables and nine BNC_2_LEMO interfaces. We left the interface power supply in AC and UNBALANCED mode.

We also plan to install two more magnetometers (ENV_INJ_MAG and ENV_DET_MAG) as soon as possible. The goal is to map the homogeneity of the magnetic field in CEB during the expected magnetic emissions.

Today ENV_BS_MAG has been cabled (20mt of a "snake" STP) and plugged to the ADC located in TCS room. The latter has been configured, and the channels are now available as ENV_BS_MAG_N, V and W starting at 11:00 UTC.

We also injected 0 to 200Hz white noise using the BigCoil from 12:22 to 13:00 UTC (the level was close to the maximum allowed). Here is the transfer function measured between ENV_BS_MAG and ENV_CEB_MAG (purple is a reference without injected noise).

Today, starting at 09:30 UTC, another magnetic triaxial probe was installed near the IB tower (West side, near the dividing wall to the laser lab, on the South side of the MC vacuunm pipe).

The name is ENV_IB_MAG (N, V and W). - serial number 3736

Testing it with a magnetic "comb" injection (11:55 to 12:00 UTC), the lines are visible.

Good data are available starting at 12:30 UTC

Today, starting at 09:00 UTC, another magnetic triaxial probe was installed near the DT tower (East side, inside DET lab).

The name is ENV_DT_MAG (N, V and W). - serial number 3733

We attach here a map of the five new sensors placed in CEB (RED circles), togheter with the position of the Metronix sensors (RED triangle) and of the big coil (RED rectangle, but about 12 meters above, on the last terrace)

Today between 9:46 and 11:03 UTC we injected a set of 10 magnetic lines with the CEB large coil. These are meant to check the non-uniformity of the field generated inside CEB. These data can be compared with a model of the coil. The list of injected frequencies are listed in the attached screenshot image.

The last attached figure is a map of the CEB magnetometers location.

ENV_NI_MAG has been temporarily borrowed for field measurements, will be back in a few days. We have not "commented" the ADC channels, they are simply reading the noise from the unplugged cables.

ENV_NI_MAG was put back into operation today at 07:30 UTC circa

As done for CEB and WEB, today we installed a three-axis flux-gate magnetometer on NE tower base, South-West corner, with N axis pointing to Virgo North. The name is ENV_NE_MAG_N,V,W

(note that this Bartington magnetometer in WEB has been removed but this seems not written in the logbook; the current situation is that in CEB the magnetometers at the base of the towers are all Bartington, while in the terminal buildings they are Stefan Mayer)
