Contrast Defect for C8 run

We calculated the distribution of carrier Contrast Defect over the lock segments attached in 37560. The contrast defect has been evaluated according to B1p photodiode (upstream wrt OMCs), so including all the HOMs: CD = B1p/(B1p + 10.47 B4). The overall outcome including all the data of C8 is shown in figure 1, with a typical value of CD = 5.7e-4. The fact that no multi-peak distribution is evident means that basically the ITF working point of the ITF at dark fringe does not vary significantly.

In figure 2, one typical lock segment is shown with most occurying value CD = 5.7e-4 (top plot) absolutely comparable with the overall result of figure 1. In the same figure, bottom subplot is the time evolution of theCD for the same segment. Finally, the carrier gain in the recycling cavity has been computed for the latest segment (figure 3), resulting in value ranging from Gcar = 35 to 39 depending on the photodiode used. Those values are in agreement with usual findings, but work is ongoing to better pinpoint this estimation.

Comment to LSC_DARM non-stationarity (37547)

In correspondance a large glitch can be seen on the PMC transmitted power (see first plot).

Looking to the second plot, we could conclude that the gitch origin is at the level of SIB1 bench (we can see it on the IB_tx, ty and tz dofs).

Consequently this creates a glitch on the power stabilization photodiodes (located on SIB1 bench lower part) which generates a glitch on the correction

sent to the slave laser diode 2 and then a glitch on the PMC transmitted power. More work is needed to better understand the origin of those glitches.

It could be good to give a look around the IB tower to find the origin of the glitch. It might come also from inside the tower but in that case it wiil harder to find.

LSC_DARM non-stationarity
A first look at LSC_DARM signal and acoustic channels
confirming that the acoustic glitches have always the same structure
and are only visible in ENV_EIB_MIC (see plots 3 and 4).

Also, non-stationary lines are well visible in LSC_DARM
around 950 and 750 Hz (plot 2).

Also, a non-stationarity, present on almost all the LSC_DARM
spectrum but more clearly visible around 3600 Hz (see plot 1)
with a periodicity around 2.5 sec (could it be linked to
auto-alignment not yet implemented?)

Plot 5 shows the distribution of the signal LSC_DARM and how it evolves with time
during a science segment of C8. Just to show a general view of the non-stationarity
of the signal. Each bin of the left plot contains the distribution of LSC_DARM over 5 sec.

Comment to Coupling of SDB1_LC to DARM (37501)

We added a roll-off filter to the TX (and TZ) control of SDB1.

It seems that the coherence between error signals of SDB1 in TX and DARM has been killed, see figure attached (purple is during C8, blue is after adding a roll-off).

We are not sure the filter used to control SDB1_TX is optimal, let's see how things are with the roll-off, it might be a good idea at some point to inject noise and find a better filter for the control of SDB1 in TX

Comment to scattered light evidence in B7_DC and B8_DC (37500)

No, there is no evidence of B7/B8 arches coupling to DARM.

The only coupling I identified is scattered light in LSC_B4_DC also seen in LSC_MICH_ERR.

Comment to scattered light evidence in B7_DC and B8_DC (37500)
The arches (at least in these case) are clearly due to relative motion of SWEB with regard to the WE mirror
Shown are the arches and the absolute value of the speed, measured with V1:SWEB_LC_Z + V1:Sc_WE_MIR_Z.
See figure.

The question is whether these arches couple to DARM. And if yes, then it would be good argument to turn on the control of SWEB in Z using the ground subtracted local controls, and see if it helps.

bruco tables, and scattered light in B4.

Here links to bruco tables of a few target channels during C8:

Maybe worth to note how bruco did spot a relevant coherence with SDB1_LC_TX at the 31Hz and all other SDB1 mechanical resonance: see attached Figure 1.

B7, B8, and also B4, DC channels show little coherence with all other channels. This is might be consequence of the fact that these signals are dominated by scattered light. This seems indeed the case for B7_DC and B8_DC.  Actually also B4_DC shows some arches (Figure 2),  to be better checked with Omicron.

Comment to scattered light evidence in B7_DC and B8_DC (37500)

Scattered light glitches as seen by Omicron in B8.

In this spectrogram, arches are well resolved. The periodicity is ~1.4 s. The SNR is huge : several hundreds. As noted in the previous post, we see secondary arches and some echo around the ~80 Hz line. All channels processed by Omicron were checked. These arches are only seen in LSC_B8_6MHz_I with a much weaker intensity.

Similar arches were observed in the B7 signal.

Comment to Coupling of SDB1_LC to DARM (37501)
Good catch! The roll-off on SDB1_LC_TX_corr (and TZ) is missing.
For comparison in the middle bottom pane is the SDB1 and SNEB TX feedbacks. The bench suspension are completely different, so the two are not really comparable. But there is clearly a gap of a few orders of magnitude that should be easy to fill.

As a side note. In the upper left plot is shown the signal from the bench local controls SDB1_LC_TX, and from the quadrant SDB1_B5_QD2_TX_err. The two are added to generate the error signal for the SDB1 TX control, SDB1_LC_TX_err. Around 0.5Hz the drift control signal from B5 becomes significant. Above a few Hz it is completely negligible. And will state that way as the roll-off filter is applied after the sum.

frequency noise in DARM, peaks and lines between 30Hz and 60Hz

This entry comes a bit late, since our crew has already spotted it and is working to reduce frequency noise. However.... as Figure 1 shows, there is significant coherence between DARM and SSFS in the region 20-100Hz.

The rightmost of the 30Hz double-peak structure is associated to frequency noise: this is precisely at 30.8Hz, and matches to a peak in the SIB1 angular signals particularly intense in tz: see Figure 2. This peak is also coherent with ENV accelerometers on IB as indicated by bruco.  This peak seems one of the SIB1 mechanical resonance which was troubling SSFS in January.  Reminder: the leftmost one of the double-peak, at 29.8Hz, is not coherent with SSFS and has been found to come from SDB1

A structure similar to the 30.8Hz is present at 62.5Hz, probably another SIB1 tz mode: see Figure 3.

Last to note among SSFS contaminations (look again Figure 1) is the 1Hz comb showing between 40Hz and 50Hz. It is not coherent with *Clocks* but with CEB magnetometers and power line sniffers. The suspected source is the CT heaters. It looks the same which was noted in February and March.

Coupling of SDB1_LC to DARM

The fluctuations of the sensitivity are dominated by the power fluctuations of B1p, which are due to the fact that the ITF alignment is not yet controlled by the quadrants (fig 1).

When the noise is high a lot of structures grow, which resamble to mechanical resonances (fig 2).

A good candidate to be the source of that noise is the angular control of SDB1. Fig 3 is the transfer function between SDB1_LC_TX_corr and DARM,  when the noise is maximally coupled.

scattered light evidence in B7_DC and B8_DC

Typical arches are visible in the spectrograms of both B7 and B8_DC, they look uncorrelated between the two. The periodicity of arches looks around 10s.

At WE there is evidence of double arches, and also the scattered light pattern looks modulated by a 78.6Hz line .... which is not in ENV channels.

ENV coherences

I had a look at LSC_DARM coherences with ENV* channels.

here the bruco table: 1800s from May 7, 6:05 UTC, https://scientists.virgo-gw.eu/DataAnalysis/bruco/2017-05-07/LSC_DARM_1178172318_ENV/

Figure 1 is the "ENV budget" made projecting coherences, channels are divided by Type of noise (RED are all *ACC* and *SEIS* channels, and so on ... see the plot legend)

  • major coherent contribution is seismic, 150-450Hz

Figure 2 shows the SEISMIC "sub-budget", indicating LOCATIONS of most coherent seismic channels:

  • small line at 31Hz  (... it is NOT the big structure at 29.8 Hz) and 101Hz line are coherent at IB tower  (Figure 3)
  • structures in the 150-450Hz zone look mostly coherent with accelerometers in DT zone (Figure 4)

I extracted the name of max coherent channel at the most prominent spectral peaks:

% freq(Hz) (ASD) maxCOHE channel

Correlations
I did a brute-force search for correlation between the various new ranges and several other interesting channels (B4/B1p_DC, B4_12/112MHz_mag), for the five hour lock stretch during the early hours of Saturday. Full table of results is attached, with some interesting channels marked by hand. I am cleaning up the script for finding the correlations, so that it can be used by others.

The channels CAL_RANGE_NSNS, CAL_RANGE_10x10 and CAL_RANGE_30x30 all correlate strongly with SDB2_B1p_QD2_V_6MHz_Q, SDB2_B1s2_Cam_PosY and a bunch of similar channels, which might indicate some dependence on a fluctuations in TX of some mirrors. See fig 1 for a typical correlation. Fig 2 shows that the correlation seems not that obvious when looking in the time domain, even though the correlation is significant.

For the DC and sideband powers, it is harder to find interesting channels, since they correlate with a lot of other DC powers. For B1p_DC, it seems that again V1:SDB2_B1p_QD2_V_6MHz_Q_mean is among the most interesting channels, while for the B4_DC and sideband powers also SPRB_B4_QD1_H seems of interest. Also some channels related to the local control of SDB1 show up, this might be due to the drift control following the beam.

Operator Report - night shift 06/05
Upon arrival I found a storm of wind and rain on the virgo site and the itf just unlocked; to relock I had to wait the transit of the storm, then the itf was locked again but the bad weather conditions made the lock no so stable indeed this first lock lasted less then one our.
The weather condition improve over the night; the itf lost the lock other four times suddenly without any warning like a worsening of the alignment or something other; I tried to look at some signals (first four plots) it seems that a some point the ssfs_corr become flat in all the three cases, to better investigate.
Anyway the lock acquisition works pretty well it was needed to adjust only the PR alignment

the drift of the SPRB vertical correction changed its trend over the night (last plot)

Comment to Increase of calibration line around 50 Hz at next unlock (37472)

The following plots show the different injected lines and their effect on DARM after having increase the amplitude of the 50 Hz lines (reload of CALnoise at 10:39 UTC).

Figure 1: The lnes sent to NE, WE and BS have a snr of ~100 in DARM. The line sent to PR is not seen in DARM around 50 Hz but is seen with SNR ~5 around 350 Hz.

FIgure 2: modulus and phase vs time of the DARM/CAL_MIR_Z_CORR TF at the line frequencies. As expected, the fluctuations of the NE, WE, BS modulus and phase around 50 Hz are lower since the line amplitudes have been increased.
