Air convection test in optical lever box

We conducted an airflow test in the box of NI local control, to observe the effects of air currents on the local control signals.

We wanted to take data both while keeping the box's lid lifted (by about a centimetre) and also while gently blowing with a compressed air can through the holes of the bench that host the optical lever, with the box closed.

Unfortunately due to our proximity to the tower the interferometer unlocked a number of times.

We gathered data with the box's lid open during the lock acquisition between UTC 17:42 and 18:18. The unlock was caused by us attempting to gently close the lid to continue with the convection test.

Since approaching the optical lever bench to spray compressed air through the holes always unlocked the ITF, we taped a rubber hose to one of the holes and managed to spray air from a distance (pictures). We succeded in spraying airs in approximately 30 seconds bursts starting at UTC 19:26:30, for a couple of minutes.

We caused one last unlock by removing the hose and the aluminum tape when we left.

Data from this operations will be examined in the future.

Provided that the bench, its mount and the tower base are very massive and stiff

- The hose attached under the bench could oscillate without problems even during the LN3 operation.
- clean air flow did not produced unlocks
- The steps on the floor were gentle but effective to reach the access with our arms, we got close to the tower base bu few mm. no probl on the LN3
- a very gentle stroke under the bench (maybe a pressure of 0.1-1 grams) produced unlock
- pulling down the hose glued with the tape did not disturb LN3 until the bench was touched again to complete the detachment

I think there are clear indications of anomalous electric behaviour at NI

Today we repeated the test of touching the metallic base (optical table) of the local controls of NI and WI

The test was:

NI

  • 14:10:00 UTC touching (very gently) with the left hand using a rubber glove, the other hand was in the pocket of the pants
  • 14:12:00 the same but right hand placed on the metal structure of the tower
  • 14:13:00 touching (very gently) with the left hand (no rubber glove), the other hand was in the pocket of the pants
  • 14:14:00 the same but right hand placed on the metal structure of the tower

WI as NI but with the following timetable:

  • 14:26:00
  • 14:27:00
  • 14:28:00
  • 14:29:00

We never unlocked (Mattia was performing the work. Bravo!)

This should confirm that there was no "electrical" problem (the metal optical table is attached to the metal structure of the tower), but it was probably a mechanical problem.
