Current position and situation of Virgo Magnetometers

As for today September 15, this is the updated situation of Virgo Magnetometers:

External magnetometers ENV_EXT_MAG_ are still to be pulled out from the ground, then sent to the factory for repairing. Also: a cable's connector (CEB side) has to be repaired on the field. There is one magnetometer spare unit at Virgo (Napoli's office), we could give it a chance to see if it works once put in place of the broken ones.

  • ENV_CEB_MAG are all with the right orientation, but are all around the NI tower (on the South tower base). The labels on the cables have been updated with the right name. The Vertical one has a very long grey cable instead of the standard green one.
  • ENV_MCB_MAG_N is placed in the right direction (NS) just on the West wall, very near to the UPS systems
  • ENV_NEB_MAG_N and ENV_NEB_MAG_W are in the right place and with the right position, while ENV_NEB_MAG_V is placed horizontally on the tower's base (East side), with direction EW. This last has a broken connector (magnetometer side), it is electrically still working, but not mechanically. It must be moved carefully!.
  • ENV_WEB_MAG are all with the right orientation, but only ENV_WEB_MAG_V is in the right position, while ENV_WEB_MAG_N and ENV_WEB_MAG_W are on the tower's base (North side).

There is also a little triaxial magnetometer placed on the MC vacuum pipe, near the tunnel entrance from CEB side. Only one channel is acquired with the name ENV_EER_MAG_2.

The external magnetometers were pulled out today.

We also verified that they are faulty by comparing the signals with a third Metronix sensor borrowed from the (new) Napoli's office (thanks Rosario!  I brought it back).

The one pointing toward the North direction (#0737) had water inside the first sealed chamber, but the second concentric cilinder was dry. The one pointing to the West position (#0735) was found dry in both pipes. The hamster litter we used as hygroscopic material worked very well :-)

Today we had a survey at the teminal buildings to check the location of the magnetometers.

In WEB all is standard, but ENV_WEB_MAG_N shows a high 50Hz mains signal. We tried moving it to a nearby location, but the signal remains high. However, it is not saturated.

In NEB it is confirmed that the VERTICAL one ENV_NEB_MAG_V is missing from the standard position, being relocated horizontally on the base tower (physical direction EW).

Note that the latter is missing the vertical base clamp (this base is mounted on another magnetometer that was previously at NEB, the one that now has the broken connector, and is temporarily in my office awaiting a new connector).

Today, the NEB magnetometer ENV_NEB_MAG_V, which had been moved to the base of the tower for many years, has been put back in its original position.
